The big read isn't just a concept designed to get more people reading for enjoyment (which in itself is a fine goal) ... on a larger scale, reading makes people more aware of themselves as individuals within a global community. Reading involves critical thinking, which leads to critical literacy. Fahrenheit 451 is not just about a futuristic society in which books are burned, it is about a society that has ceased to place importance on critical literacy.
